We Memorize God's Word
New Era Bible Church
I. WHY MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE:
  • Bible memory is a simply a matter of obedience to the will of God.

Joshua 1:8  This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day
and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt
make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Psalm 119:11  Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

2 Timothy 3:15-17  And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee
wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.  All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  That the man
of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

II ANYONE CAN -- Memorize Scripture

Yes! Anyone can memorize scripture.  Some people memorize fast and some memorize slow but everyone can
memorize and everyone can forget.  Discipline, accountability and review are keys to success.

Discipline -- a decision to put God's word in your mind.  Yes, it takes time, but, really, what do you have to do
    that is more important.

Accountability -- find a friend to keep you working.  Better still find a friend and work together.

Review -- we all forget.  The only way to keep Scriptures in your mind is to review, daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

It has been the experience of this writer that using verse cards is an excellent tool in learning Scriptures.  Now that
palm computers are easily obtainable,
MyVerses, inexpensive software program can conveniently replace verse
cards. The second part of a good memory program is to organize verses in topics. Once your “pantry” is filled it
becomes almost “automatic” to share the hope that is within you.

Beginning to memorize a verse.

Read the context of the verse you are beginning to memorize.  Read at least a chapter before and after the
verse.  Try to develop a clear understanding of what the verse means. Write out what the verse means and
what the verse means to you.

Read the verse through several times thoughtfully, aloud or in a whisper. It is helpful to hear yourself saying
the verse. Each time you read it, say the topic, reference, verse, and then the reference again.

Discuss the verse with God in prayer, and continue to seek His help for success in Scripture memory.

Memorizing the verse . . .

Work on saying the verse aloud as much as possible.  MyVerses program gives milestone points at repeating
    the verses 45, 90, 135 times, etc.

Learn the topic and reference first.

After learning the topic and reference, learn the first phrase of the verse. Once you have learned the topic,
reference, and the first phrase and have repeated them several times, continue adding more phrases after
you can quote correctly what you have already learned.

Think about how the verse applies to you and your daily circumstances.

Always include the topic and reference as part of the verse as you learn and review it.
Find an accountability partner.  Meet with him/her each week and go over your verses.

Writing the verse out can be helpful.  Use all your senses: Hear it, See it, Say It, and Write it.

THIS IS THE KEY

    Scripture is not LEARNED!

    IT IS RELEARNED!  RELEARNED!!  RELEARNED!!!

Review the verse immediately after learning it, and repeat it frequently in the next few days. This is crucial for fixing
the verse firmly in your mind because of the tendency to forget something recently learned.

Review! Review! Review! Repetition is the best way to engrave the verses on your memory.
